University of Central Oklahoma Seal About University of Central Oklahoma

University of Central Oklahoma is a public higher education institute located Edmond, Oklahoma. The university was established in 1890 before the foundation of the State of Oklahoma as the Territorial Normal School. The school received $5000 of donations from Oklahoma County and 40 acre-piece of land from Anton Classen. The school used 10 acres of the land to establish its campus while using the remaining part of the land for fundraising. Classes started in the following year in the Epworth League Room within the unfurnished First Methodist Church with 23 students.  In 1892, the school established its first building on campus and was opened in the following year. The first graduation ceremony was held in 1897. The name of the school was changed in 1904 to Central State Normal School. In 1919, the school received approval from the State Board of Education to offer 4-year bachelor programs. In 1941, the college joined a coordinated state system of post-secondary education. In 1954, the college started offering Master of Teaching Degree program.  In 1971, Central Oklahoma was recognized by the state legislature as a university changing its name to Central State University. The name of the university was changed again in 1990 to its current name.

Central Oklahoma has an urban campus covering 210 acres. The campus has several prominent buildings including Max Chambers Library, Coyner Health Sciences Building, Howell Hall, Mitchell Hall Theatre, Thatcher Hall, Wantland Hall and W. Roger Webb Forensic Science Institute. The campus also offers 5 residential buildings including Murdaugh Hall and West Hall. The university athletic teams compete in NCAA Division II as member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The university is divided into 7 colleges including the British Academy of Contemporary Music. Central Oklahoma was ranked in 2009 among the top %10 of US colleges by the Forbes Magazine.
