About University of California-Berkeley
UC Berkeley is a public research institute and the flagship institute of the University of California system. It traces its beginning to the year 1866, to the College of California, a private institute. After merging with the state-run higher educational institutes, it became ‘University of California’ in 1868, a state higher education institute.
As more campuses were added and as it became part of the university system, it came to be known as the University of California-Berkeley. It is based in Berkeley, California and has been dedicated to bringing change, locally as well as globally by providing learning and growth opportunities for its students and encouraging them for intellectual enquiry and creativity.
Besides rigorous academic life, the college also offers opportunities for growth outside of classrooms. There are more than 1000 student-run groups and organizations which offer various interests and platforms for developing skills. The LEAD Center offers leadership and engagement programs along with the student government which is called ‘ASUC’. The campus also has its Greek life. Students also have their musical groups bringing choral and jazz ensembles but also have the opportunity to be part of symphonies and concerts. With the publications and student media groups working on campus, this presents interesting opportunities for the students to develop their interest in writing and media. Volunteering and service work is a highlight of the university and opportunities to work are available both on and off campus. There are famous campus traditions such as Big Game Rally, Founders Rock, RRR Week, Spirit songs, Daffodil Festival and many more. There are also opportunities for students to maintain their physical fitness, from recreational facilities to intramural sports. There are campus athletic teams called ‘Golden Bears’ which compete at NCAA Division I; the official campus mascot is ‘Oski the Bear’ and the colors are Berkeley Blue and California Gold.
The academic programs offered at the university consist of more than 350 degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. Its notable facilities/departments are Haas School of Business, Richard and Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy, Hearst Mining Building, Doe Library and more.
