Plattsburgh is a public four year educational institute that traces its beginnings to its founder, Smith M. Weed – a businessman of the region who envisioned having a teacher training institute. It was in 1869 when he first proposed his plan and it was in 1889 that the institute received approval as Plattsburgh State Normal and Training School.

With State University of New York system being established in year 1948, the normal school also became a part of the system and was renamed as State University of New York College at Plattsburgh. The college employs world class faculty and quality programs equipping its students with intellect and critical thinking transforming them into leaders.

Based in Plattsburgh, New York, the campus life at Plattsburgh is fun filled and provides a learning environment. Students find more than 100 student run clubs and organisations which serve as learning platforms outside of campus and help students form lasting personal and professional connections. There is also the Student Association which looks after the student welfare on campus, represents their issues and, supports activities and events. Activities and events include arts and cultural activities, fine arts display, theatre acts, musical programs and others. There is community service and civic engagement which is offered through service learning as well as active involvement in the community through alternative break programs, Project HELP – students fighter hunger, counselling and mentoring children, fundraising and others. There are also various outdoor activities and recreation programs such as skiing, hiking, rock climbing etc and its ‘Odyssey Freshman Adventure Program’. Additionally, there are also athletic teams ‘Cardinals’ taking part at NCAA Division III. Other activities and resources consist of Organization Development, multicultural activities and career development services. The campus mascot is ‘Burghy’ and the colors are Red and White.

Academic programs at Plattsburgh consist of undergraduate programs with 90 majors, 70+ minors, five Certificate programs and 15+ Master degree programs. Its prominent facilities are Feinberg Library. Macdonough Hall, Macomb Hall, Mason Hall, Rockwell Kent Gallery and Collection, Hawkins Hall and more.
