About Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music
Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music is a public higher education located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The conservatory was established in 1959 by state legislator Ernesto Ramos Antonini following the success of the Casals Festival in 1957. The conservatory initially aimed at preparing students to participate in the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra or become music teachers in the state public education system. It originally operated in a former factory in Hato Rey. The administration of the college was transferred several times between public agencies since its establishment including the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company, the Administration for the Encouragement of Arts and Culture, and the Musical Arts Corporation. In 1995, the college got financial and administrative independence. It is currently administered by a board of trustees who are appointed by the governor and approved by the senate. In 2008, the college moved to its current location in the historic Miramar section.
The college campus consists of 3 buildings; the Historic Building, the Academic Building and green-roof. The Historic Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was formerly known as Mothers of the Sacred Heart Private School and Miramar’s Old Refuge for Girls. The Academic Building hosts various facilities including the Amaury Veray Library and the Bertita & Guillermo L. Martínez Theater. The campus is used to host various concerts for the local community.
The college is accredited by 4 organizations including National Association of Schools of Music and Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
