About Paul Smiths College of Arts and Science
Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Science is a private higher education institute located in Paul Smiths, New York. The college was established in 1946 following the bequest of Phelps Smith son of Apollos Smith who established Paul Smith’s Hotel. He donated the money to establish the college in addition to 20,000 acres for its campus. In 2015, the college refused $20 million donation as the donor set a condition to change the college’s name to Joan Weill-Paul Smith’s College. The New York State Supreme Court ruled that the name will not be changed as the original bequest of the college stated that it should be known forever as Paul Smith’s College. Accordingly, the donation was withdrawn.
The college has one of the largest campuses in the world covering 14,000 acres overlooking St. Regis Lake which offers the students a beach and docks. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Phelps Smith Administration Building, Cantwell Hall, Freer Science Hall, Pickett Hall, Joan Weill Adirondack Library, Paolozzi Center, Buxton Annex and Saunders Sports Complex. The campus also offers 15 residence halls including Lydia Martin Smith Hall, Currier Hall, Lakeside Hall and Franklin Hall. The college athletic teams are members of Yankee Small College Conference and USCSA. The official colors of the college are green and white while its mascot is called Bobcat.
The college is divided into 5 departments. It offers 20 bachelor degree programs and 7 associate degree programs. Additionally, students can choose among 12 minors. It follows a long tradition by offering hands-on education with coursework in a variety of fields. Paul Smith’s College was ranked 31st in Regional Colleges North in 2017 by U.S. News and World Report. The college operates several centers and institutes as Visitors Interpretive Center, Adirondack Watershed Institute and Adirondack Center for Working Landscapes.
