About Oklahoma Panhandle State University
Oklahoma Panhandle State University (OPSU) is a public higher education institute located in Goodwell, Oklahoma. The university was established in 1908 following a decision by the Oklahoma Legislature led to the establishment of agricultural and mechanical schools as well as normal schools for each of the Supreme Court judicial districts. The college was opened in the following year as a secondary agriculture school under the name of Pan-Handle Agricultural Institute. In 1915, the college started offering courses to prepare teachers for public schools. In 1921, it became a 2-year college changing its name to Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College. It expanded in 1925 to a four year college. The name was changed again in 1967 to Oklahoma Panhandle State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. It finally got its current name as a university in 1974.
The university aims at providing higher education to the community of Oklahoma Panhandle and surrounding areas. The university campus offers several distinctive buildings including Sewell-Loofbourrow Hall, Hesper Hall, Carter Hall, Field Hall, Muller Hall, Hughes-Strong Hall, Hefley Hall, Hamilton Hall, Carl Wooten Field, Aggie Hall, Sexton Hall and Garrett Leo Draper Clubhouse. The campus library is known as Marvin E. McKee Library. The university athletic teams compete in the Sooner Athletic Conference and the NAIA Central States Football League. The oldest building on campus, Franklin Hall, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
OPSU is divided into 6 schools and colleges. It offers bachelor and associate degree programs. The university is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in addition to 3 other organizations providing specific accreditation to certain programs. The university offers financial support to enrolled students as academic scholarships, activity scholarships or scholarships from Panhandle State Foundation.
