Loyola Marymount University Seal About Loyola Marymount University

Loyola Marymount University is a private coeducational institute that follows the Jesuit and Marymount traditions. It is a member of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The university was established under its current status following the merge of Loyola University and Marymount College in 1973. Loyola University in turn was established in 1911 as a successor for St. Vincent’s College which was established in 1865. On the other hand, Marymount College was established in 1933 following the establishment of Marymount School in 1923. The partnership between Loyola University and Marymount College started in 1968 when Marymount’s four-year program decided to share the facilities at Loyola’s Westchester campus while staying as two independent schools located at the same campus. In 1970, the Associated Students of both schools merged before the complete merge of the Schools three years later. Along with this merge, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange joined the Society of Jesus and the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary as one of the sponsoring religious communities of Loyola Marymount University. Moreover, the Marymount College of Orange name was changed to the Orange Campus of Loyola Marymount University.

Loyola Marymount lies on the top of the Del Rey Hills bluffs covering 150 acres. It was initially established on 99-acre land donated by Harry Culver. The campus offers several distinctive buildings including Xavier Hall, Sacred Heart Chapel, Alumni Mall, Sunken Gardens, University Hall and the Regents Bell Tower. The campus was selected by the Princeton Review as the 7th most beautiful campus in America and the 3rd most beautiful campus according to CampusSqueeze college e-zine. The university also operates Loyola Law School in downtown Los Angeles.

The university is divided into six colleges and schools including Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts and Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering. Loyola Marymount was ranked 94th nationwide by U.S. News while its MBA was ranked 6th nationwide by Bloomberg Businessweek.
