About Georgian Court University
Georgian Court University is a private Roman Catholic University that was established in 1908 by the Sisters of Mercy. The institution was initially located in North Plainfield, New Jersy as a school for liberal arts for women named Mount Saint Mary College. In 1924, the Sisters of Mercy purchased the Georgian Court in Lakewood Township to which the institute was relocated and named the Georgian Court College. Eighty years later, the institute was acknowledged as a University by the New Jersy Commission on Higher Education. The University remained as a school for women till 2013 when it became coeducational.
The university campus was previously the summer estate of the millionaire George Jay Gould I which was designed by the architecture Bruce Price. The campus features several distinctive gardens including the Italian Garden, the Sunken Garden, the Japanese Garden, the formal garden and the Sister Mary Grace Burns Arboretum. The campus also has one of the 45 real tennis courts found worldwide. It was designated in 1985 as a National Historic Landmark. GCU has also two braches at Wall Township and Hazlet, New Jersy. The official colors of the university are blue and gold while its mascot is the lion. The university is member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and its teams compete in the NCAA Division II.
The university is divided into three schools offering 51 undergraduate programs and 9 graduate programs. There are also some evening programs or online study programs. GCu is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university emphasizes on the participation of students in serving the community as it was declared in 2015 that GCU students and staff provided more than 90,000 hours for community service both locally and abroad. Almost 95% of the enrolled students get financial support through financial aid or scholarship programs.
