Dominican University of California Seal About Dominican University of California

Dominican is a private non profit institute of higher education which traces its history to year 1850 when Joseph Alemany took position as the Bishop of Monterey. Coming back to California, the bishop discussed his vision to set up schools and after a lot of struggle started a junior college in 1917 called St. Dominic de Guzman. As it progressed it made its way into Association of American Universities.

Gradually it took shape and in 2000 came to be renamed as Dominican University of California. It is based in San Rafael, California and with its quality educational programs aims to produce individuals who are reflective on their communities and their problems, active in performing their duties and professionally successful.

Dominican brings an extensive campus life, providing every activity and opportunity it feels necessary for the development of its students. There is most importantly Student Government (ASDU), which offers leadership positions to the students where they work for their fellow students and get a firsthand experience of the work. There are also numerous student led clubs which serve as social platform where students gather to learn from each other. Students also learn through conferences, and lecture series being held on the campus teaching leadership and opportunity building. There is campus ministry which is the religious office and offers prayer and worship to help students looking for spiritual development. Students are also encouraged to step outside campus and be engaged with the community by working as volunteers on different causes or programs. There are performing arts opportunities through gallery exhibits, theatre and ballet performances and others. There are also some unique traditions such as Shield Day, Family Weekend and others. The university also has its athletic teams, ‘Penguins’ competing at NCAA Division II. The campus mascot is ‘Chilly the Penguin’ and the colors are Black, Gold and White.

Academic programs at the university consist of undergraduate programs with 24 majors and 30 minors, and nine graduate programs. Some prominent facilities are Archbishop Alemany Library, Meadowlands Hall, Guzman Hall, Caleruega Hall, Conlan Recreation Center and Barowsky School of Business.
