Colgate is a private liberal arts institute that started way back in 1817 when a group of 13 men founded Baptist Education Society of the State of New York. The society received its charter by the state legislature in 1819 marking its official beginning. The institute changed its name several times before adopting its present name in 1890, in recognition of the favors bestowed by William Colgate, soapmaker, and his family.

The university is situated in Hamilton, New York and stays committed to taking in individuals who express interest in their chosen fields and knowledge acquisition and develop them into responsible professionals, thoughtful leaders and engaged community members.

The campus life at Colgate University is vibrant as well as engaging. There are student clubs and organisations that involve students in skill learning and interacting with each other out of class. There are over 180 student organisations present along with Fraternities and Sororities. Students are also encouraged to bring up new ventures and initiate startups at the campus. There is also the ALANA Cultural Center which acts as the hub for cultural events and cultural activities resulting in education along with activities. Arts is also highly encouraged and besides academics; it also presents extracurricular opportunities which include students bringing creative performances and musical groups. Students at Colgate also work for community engagement by putting in volunteering hours. Religion is considered an important part and so every faith is practiced at the campus. This helps students with their spiritual upliftment. An interesting university tradition is that number 13 is considered lucky and comes from 13 men who founded the college with 13 prayers and offered $13. Students also take part in athletics; its teams ‘Raiders’ take part in NCAA Division I. Its mascot is a ‘Raider’ and the campus colors are Maroon, Gray and White.

As for its academic programs, Colgate provides undergraduate programs with 55 majors and nine minors. Its prominent departments and facilities are Picker Interdisciplinary Science Institute, Shaw Wellness Institute, W.M. Keck Center for Language Study Longyear Museum of Anthropology, Picker Art Gallery, Everett Needham Case Library and others.
