California Lutheran University About California Lutheran University

Cal Lutheran is a Private Liberal arts university that started in 1959, formally being incorporated as California Lutheran College. The planning for the college however began in 1954 when a twenty five member committee met and California Lutheran Educational Foundation (CLEF) was established in 1957. It was 1980s that brought real development to the institute; it expanded its programs to include graduate programs and with that transitioned as a university, taking on its new name in 1989.

The start of the present century brought further developments, and the institute strengthened in its mission towards becoming an institute committed to preparing individuals for not only their careers but for greater purpose of leading their societies through their positive contribution. The university is situated in Thousand Oaks, California, and has four centers and a seminary in five other locations throughout California.

California Lutheran University is about bringing transformation for its students. The institute brings experience and education both inside and outside classrooms. Outside classroom, the students have organisations and clubs involving students over different interests and fields. It also develops a sense of community responsibility in its students through multicultural volunteering programs, and raising awareness for social justice concerns and issues. The students practice leadership activities by becoming university ambassadors and mentors to new students. Students are also encouraged to contribute and volunteer for the community. Such activities include economic development projects or working for non profit groups. Besides serious work, students also enjoy a thriving arts environment, such as theatre performances and musical activities. Similarly, there is an active athletic presence of the university at the NCAA Division III. The campus colors are Purple and Gold.

Academic programs offered by Cal Lutheran consist of undergraduate programs with 36 majors and 36 minor options. There are also graduate programs, offered through four schools, consist of 30 degree programs. Its notable facilities are Kwan Fong Gallery, William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art and Barbara Collins Arboretum.
