California College of the Arts Seal About California College of the Arts

CCA is a private school that is dedicated to teaching arts, architecture, designing and other such disciplines. It was founded in the year 1907 by Frederick Meyer, a cabinet maker who was part of the Arts and Crafts movement which started in Europe. It was his vision to set up an institute for artists who would be focused on the practical aspect of arts, and so even after his house and institute was destroyed in earthquake and fire in 1906, he still went ahead and opened a school the next year, called as School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts.

The college took on its present name in 1936 and has developed into a multi campus institute with two campuses in San Francisco and Oakland since then. With its mission to provide for a critical study of arts through innovation, social responsiveness and globally integrative approach, the college has produced what it calls ‘agents of change’, who have worked on films, award winning movies, magazines as well as museums around the globe.

California College of the Arts remains strictly committed to the development of arts in its students. The campus life provides various artistic opportunities for the students to actively take part in and to learn from. The college holds over 150 events, exhibitions and other opportunities; some in collaboration with other partners and universities. The college holds global cultural events such as Holi, exhibitions of English and Spanish literature, reading sessions as part of Writer’s Series as well as Senior exhibitions and other collective exhibitions. The college also runs its CCA Cares where it primarily focuses on the problems being faced by its community of students. The team behind this initiative aims to intervene into the students’ academic as well as personal choices to provide them with support and guidance to better deal the ongoing challenges.

CCA offers undergraduate programs, Bachelors Degree programs in 22 disciplines of study and graduate programs, Masters Degree program with 12 study options. There are also special program and interdisciplinary studies that complement academic achievement. Its distinctive facilities are its galleries which include Isabelle Percy West Gallery, PLAySPACE / The Orange Box and more.
