Bard College Seal About Bard College

Bard initially began as St. Stephen’s College as early as 1860. The college was founded by John Bard at the time, when America was going through national crisis and the vision of its founder was plain simple: to preserve the ‘liberal education’ in the country. The college made its way gradually into 20th century and in 1934 got its present name, after its founder. With further expansion, addition of buildings and expansion to the curriculum, the college finally took shape as a Private Liberal Arts college that it is today.

Based in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, it has always taken innovative approach towards development. Bard College has developed new programs and has been associated with institutes. It introduced a dual program with a Palestinian university and also Brad Prison Initiative which introduced education for those in prisons in five prisons across New York State. This reflects the college’s forward thinking and openness to diversity.

Campus life at Bard is no different. There are student activities which involve concerts performed in garage; its Chimeng Quartet won a silver medal in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. There are language tables where students meet, eat together and practice languages. This enables cultural interaction on a larger scale. Sustainability is a major concern which is addressed through the Bard College Farm which is an organic farm, run by the students. Besides linking with the local agricultural community, it also educates students at Bard about the food systems. There are college teams as well that participate at the NCAA Division III. The teams are called ‘Raptors’ and the colors are Red and White.

The college provides a wide range of academic programs. There are undergraduate programs with 35 majors as well as concentrations, and there are more than 12 graduate programs being offered. There are programs in sustainability as well, at both the levels. There are Early College programs available at the campus as well. There are Bard institutes outside of the region, in five different locations, nationally and internationally. Its prestigious facility is the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts.
