About Arizona State University
Arizona State or ASU is a Public research university based in Phoenix, Arizona. It was when the act for establishing a normal school was passed by 13th Arizona Territorial Legislature in 1885 that the Territorial Normal School was founded. This was the beginning of what was to become ASU. It remained a teacher training institute for a long time and it was in 1958, after gradual progress that the university got its present name. Evolving through the years in its academic journey and serving the students, the university has grown into five campuses throughout the region.
Arizona State University has emerged as the university growing simultaneously with the community and people it serves. For its efforts in the field of research, it has been classified as having ‘very high research activity (RU/VH)’ by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university involves a high achieving faculty including Nobel Laureates, National Academy members and others.
Being a huge network of campuses, ASU has a large student network involved in interesting activities and compelling traditions. It still continues its 98 year old tradition, Lantern Walk, which is before homecoming and is symbolic of lighting the path where students and faculty both participate. A similar tradition involves painting letter ‘A’ on the mountains by the freshmen and so shows beginning of another year. It exists since 1930. The university has also been taking part in the growing sustainability efforts. It has been generating electricity through solar energy. It is the only university in the country to generate so much of electricity through the means. There are athletics at the university as well. Its teams ‘Sun Devils’ take part in NCAA Division I and have won 23 championships. The campus colors are Maroon and Gold.
ASU offers more than 350 undergraduate programs along with choice of minor and certifications. There are graduate programs, more than 450 programs including certificate programs. The college also provides an Entrepreneurship + Innovation organization that help the students to materialize their ideas. The most prestigious departments at the university are Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, W. P. Carey School of Business, and others.
