What is a Jet Engine Mechanic?
The following responsibilities are common for Aircraft Mechanics:
- Assembles and installs electrical, plumbing, mechanical, hydraulic and structural components onto the aircraft
- Inspects the entire exterior and interior of the airplane for corrosion, distortion or any visible cracks in the fuselage, engine, wings, and tail, etc. using magnetic inspection equipment and tools
- Cleans, refuels, and changes the oil in the aircraft
- Conducts routine and special inspections on all aspects of the aircraft that are required by the FAA
- Prepares and paints any aircraft exterior surfaces and/or parts
A Day In The Life
Aircraft mechanics are responsible for working on various parts and areas of an aircraft. They repair, service and maintain all aspects, parts and systems of an airplane with exception of the instruments within the cockpit. This includes replacing parts, assessing the wear and damage, repairing and electrical or mechanical damage, and determining if any other parts of the aircraft need replaced or fixed. These individuals use a wide variety of diagnostic equipment, computers and hand tools to assist them with these jobs. They must maintain the aircraft safety standards according the the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) legal safety standards.

How To Become a Jet Engine Mechanic
An airline mechanic needs to have comprehensible mechanical ability and skills. They must also have an aptitude for operating complex machines and equipment and the capability to understand technology and computers. The Federal Aviation Association, or the FAA, has a list of requirements for individuals that want to become certified in aviation mechanics. That list includes, and individual must be a United States citizen, be 18 years or older, English must be their primary language, have 18 months experience on air frames or power plants and pass a written and oral comprehensive exam. Others may want to also study to receive an associates degree in aviation maintenance technology and aviation technical engineering.
