About Vassar College
Vassar is a private liberal arts college that was established in 1861. A present-day co-educational institute, it was founded by Matthew Vassar and became the first women’s degree granting institute in the entire country. It was in 1969 that it started taking in male pupils and became a coeducational institute. It was second member institute of the Seven Sisters colleges.
It is based in Poughkeepsie, New York and continues to be the firm foundation of knowledge and growth for its students, focusing on critical thinking, innovative as well as analytical development, nurturing the character and spearheading for personal and professional success.
For students at Vassar College, the campus experience is diverse and enriching, full of activities and programs. There are 170+ student-run organizations along with the student government association which help improve campus experience for students and in getting involved in campus activities. These also serve as leadership experiences. There are programs aimed at improving cultural awareness, and calling for inclusion. There is a women’s center working for women rights and empowerment. Students also actively engage in community service and development through campaigning and donation activities, community-engaged learning program and various other education initiatives. There is also the campus newspaper, a creative and learning space for those interested in publications and writing. There is the student center called ALANA Center offering space and serving as a hub for cultural, social, academic and other activities. The students also benefit from the campus religious and spiritual life, working as an advisory and supporting committee. Students are also assisted with their career development through internships and job opportunities, networking, interview prep and resume writing. There are also fitness programs, intramurals and athletic opportunities at the campus. The athletic teams are called Brewers, being a member of NCAA Division II; the mascot is ‘The Brewer’ and the colors are Burgundy and Gray.
At Vassar, the academic programs consist of undergraduate programs with 51 majors and 13 multidisciplinary programs. Its notable facilities are Martha Rivers and E. Bronson Ingram Library, Frederick Ferris Thompson Memorial Library, Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center and more.
