University of Wisconsin-Platteville Seal About University of Wisconsin-Platteville

UW-Platteville is a state university that was created in 1866 as a teacher preparation institute, and was called the Platteville Normal School. It gradually progressed, becoming a state teacher college and then a state college when it expanded its program offerings. It also transformed into Wisconsin Institute of Technology in 1939. It was in 1966 that it became a university.

It soon became part of the University of Wisconsin, getting its present day name. Through the years, University of Wisconsin-Platteville has earned name for quality academics and commitment to student development as not just successful professionals but also leaders for their communities and the world.

The campus life presents various opportunities for self fulfilment, skill learning and getting a real world exposure while having fun throughout their study period. Exposure begins with Student Governance opportunities where students get to be part of student senate, President’s Council and other such bodies representing students’ interests and concerns. Further on they are provided with many leadership activities such as participation in the Excellence in Leadership conference and Group Challenge Experience which are known for preparing students for real world experiences. Students also enjoy taking part in the more than 200 student organisations which also involve the Greek life. It also hosts many fun events and activities and a few of the traditional annual events are the Welcome Weekend, Homecoming, and Family Weekend. The campus also offers the Markee Pioneer Student Center which is the place with relaxing environment and dining places for student socialising, eating and having a good time with each other. There is also the Pioneer Activity Center, which fills in for the recreation activities for the students such as running and walking tracks, and various sports. There are athletic teams that compete at NCAA III and are called ‘Pioneers’. The officinal campus colors are Orange and Blue.

Its academic programs are undergraduate programs with 41 Majors, 66 Minors, and  17 Pre-Professional, and two Graduate programs. Its  prominent facilities/departments are David J. and Lou Ann Markee Pioneer Student Center, Patricia A. Doyle Center for Gender and Sexuality, Brigham Hall, Karrmann Library and more.
