About University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
UW–Milwaukee is a public university and a research institute which is part of the University of Wisconsin System. The present day university traces its roots to the Wisconsin State Normal School which was founded in 1885 and progressed rapidly over time. It changed locations as well as names over the periods. It took its preset shape in 1965 as it merged with University of Wisconsin–Extension’s Milwaukee.
Based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it has since its beginning served the educational needs of its communities and has become a center for professional, as well as leadership and personal development inspiring students to do more than their potential.
The campus life at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee empowers students in not just their academic development but also the extracurricular activities. There are more than 300 students as well as professional organisations on campus which invite students to meet new people and further develop their skills and put them to test. Inclusivity and diversity is a key feature of the university life and so offers centers and institutes for Jewish studies, Latin American studies, intercultural research and more. For students to have a smooth transition into their academic as well as their social life they are encouraged to take part in the ‘Living Learning Communities’ which serves as another great platform for students to help each other. The UWM campus also hosts more than 1000 student events and programs each year with the university also having its own nightlife. There is also the Student Union on campus which further provides activities and events as students participate in dance marathons, musical performances, Campus Activities Board, Fraternities and Sororities and more. There are also 15 NCAA Division I sports offered; the mascot being ‘Pounce Panther’ and the colors being Black and Gold.
As for the academic programs those consist of 77 undergraduate majors and 56 minors, 59 Masters programs, 35 doctoral and 78 certificate programs. Its notable facilities/departments are Peck School of the Arts, Lubar School of Business, Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health, Helen Bader School of Social Welfare, Golda Meir Library and more.
