UW–Madison is a public research university that is part of the University of Wisconsin System. It traces its roots to the year 1838 when it was incorporated as the University of the Territory of Wisconsin by the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature however it wasn’t until the year 1848 that it was formally established it. Since the beginning the institute took a progressive approach in education and research activities. Its first PhD was awarded in 1892.

It is located in Madison, Wisconsin, and is also the land-grant university and sea-grant university. With its contribution to student development, their professional success and knowledge building, the institute has become one of the Public Ivy universities of the country.

Besides quality education, the university has a vibrant campus environment where students find multiple opportunities to develop their skills and be part of extracurricular activities. There are more than 1000 student organisations as well as the Greek Life which serve as great platforms for pursuing interests, meet new people and form networks. Students are equally encouraged to work on their creativity through arts, present on campus. There are performance arts, dance, music, arts history and much more. There are plenty of opportunities for leadership development through the student government body called the ‘Associated Students of Madison’ and also the Student Activity Center (SAC). For promoting acceptance and inclusion, the university also has its multicultural center which offers social justice activities, a black cultural center, community building and other programs and events. The university is also famous for its ‘Wisconsin idea’ which encourages students for public service, towards their community and to work for causes locally as well as globally. The university also offers sports; its athletic teams ‘Badgers’ take part at the NCAA Division I. Its official mascot is ‘Bucky Badger’ and its colors are White and Cardinal.

Academic programs offered at UW include 232 undergraduate majors and certificate and more than 250 Masters, Doctoral and professional programs. Its notable facilities are Bascom hall, Grainger Hall, Van Hise Hall, Steenbock Memorial Library and more.
