University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Seal About University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras

UPRPR is a public institute and a research university that was originally founded as a teacher training institute in the year 1900 called the Insular Normal School. In a couple of years, by 1903 under the Law of March the university was created and which incorporated the normal school. Another development to the university happened in 1908 when it was made into a land grant institute under the Morrill-Nelson Law.

In year 1966 the university went through restructuring and eventually resulted in spreading its regional outreach, gradually establishing 10 other campuses. This campus is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It offers quality educational experience and has been rated as having high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.

At the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras students find exceptional campus life, one which does not only offer them opportunities for learning and growth but also sense of belongingness. The Office of Quality of Life looks after the student interests and works to bring campus improvement such that encourage learning among students and to for academic excellence. The campus offers Greek Life which ensures academic as well as extracurricular development in students. Besides the students also actively engage in growth and development initiatives; there are student organisations on the campus that help students with social mobility while also providing friendly spaces for pursuing their interest and passion. Students are also assisted with their daily lives through the provision of Counselling services dealing with crisis management, psychological counselling, social work and also career help. There is also the Student Council which is the student representation, in upholding their rights and voicing their concerns. The council looks after recreation and athletics and also regulates diversity on the campus. The campus athletic teams are called ‘Gallitos and jerezanas’. The campus mascot is ‘The Rooster and the Hen’ and the colors are Red and White.

As for academics, the programs consist of four Bachelors degree programs with five majors, 14 Masters Degree programs, six Doctoral programs and four graduate certificate programs.
