About University of Washington
UW is a public research higher education institute which traces its roots to earliest in 1854 when the then territorial governor suggested a higher education institute be built. After the land for the university was founded, it had its start in the year 1861 as Territorial University of Washington. In all its time the university closed three times, however survived, relocated and then expanded to become what is known today as University of Washington.
It is based in Seattle, Washington and is the flagship campus of the public universities in the state. It has developed its education and programs for preparing its students for emerging globalisation, competitive environment, focusing on research and innovation as key for solving problems.
The campus life at UW is as engaging and resourceful as its academic life. The students find a range of activities to meet new people, collaborate, find interests and form relationships. There are more than 800 registered student organisations on campus along with the Fraternities and Sororities which help in fostering growth and development. Students also take active part in leading the student government by working for students and voicing their interests. There are also plenty of other activities which help students connect with causes and work for their communities. These include violent reduction programs and activities, volunteering for health causes or working to improve cross border and global relations, creating awareness and improving understanding. For having fun and relaxing round the campus, there is also Husky Union Building, which offers student lounges, bowling alley and the Q center. There are also physical activities and plenty of recreation available such as mindfulness activities, kayaking, swimming and sports. The university takes part at NCAA Division I. Its teams are called ‘Huskies’, the mascot is ‘Harry the Husky, and Dubs’ and the colors are Purple and Gold.
The university offers 180 majors in around 79 different fields of study. Some of its notable dept./facilities are Michael G. Foster School of Business, Daniel J. Evans School of Public Policy and Governance, Suzzallo Library and the Meany Hall.
