About University of Central Florida
University of Central Florida is a public higher education institute located in Orlando, Florida. The university was established in 1963 the Florida Legislature as a coeducational non-segregated university under the name of Florida Technological University. It aimed at providing educational programs that fulfills the needs of the space-age. In 1964, the university Board of Regents decided to purchase 1000 acre-piece of land in northeast Orlando to establish its campus. Additionally, the local community donated 227 acres and 1 million for the campus. In 1967, construction started on the first building which was opened in the following year. The first class on campus included around 2,000 students divided into 5 colleges and 55 academic programs. Students were taught by 90 instructors and 150 staff members. The first mascot was selected in 1970 which was a mix of orange and astronaut known as the Citronaut. The mascot was changed in the following year to the Knight of Pegasus. In 1978, the name of the university was changed to the current name indicating the increasing diversity of the program it offers beyond its initial mission. In the same year, the university established the Central Florida Research Park focusing on space and defense-related research. In 1986, the university established the Institute for Simulation and Training and the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers. In the following years, the university grew rapidly till it became the largest university in the Unied States with respect to the number of enrolled students and faculty members.
Central Florida has 12 campuses with its main campus covering 1,415 acres. It is designed into concentric circles with the outermost circle being the Gemini Boulevard. The university athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I and the American Athletic Conference. They are nicknamed Knights and their official colors are black and gold.
The university is divided into 13 colleges including the Burnett Honors College and Rosen College of Hospitality Management. It offers 90 bachelor, 87 master’s and 31 doctoral degree programs.
