About University of California-Santa Cruz
UC Santa Cruz is a public higher educational institute and a research university which is part of the University of California system. The present-day university was founded after the city of Santa Cruz, California, where the university is based made a bid to the University of California for opening a campus there. Soon preparations were underway and the university was established in 1965.
Over the years the university developed greatly, both academically as well as non-academically and is presently a land grant and space grant institute. It offers rigorous academic routine, offering high-quality programs in both arts and sciences and developing its students for the real world challenges.
The University of California-Santa Cruz caters to both intellectual and extracurricular needs of its students. Students can start clubs and organizations or simply be part of one of the many working on the campus. These serve as exciting platforms for meeting new people and picking up on new interests. Besides these, to further shape its students into leaders it also offers cultural and media groups under the program called SOMeCA. Further involvement at the campus comes through the Learning Communities. The students could choose to become a part of any of the 10 colleges under the learning communities program. Each college offers activities, events and its own traditions. This helps brings diversity to the campus. Community service is also a significant part of university life. For the students too, the university program called ‘Slug Support’ offers counseling and student help since day one. There are equal opportunities for recreation on campus; from physical education classes, summer camps to sports. There are also athletic teams called ‘Banana Slugs’ competing at NCAA Division III. The official campus colors are Blue and Gold and the mascot is ‘Sammy the Slug’.
Academic programs offered at the university are undergraduate programs, with 65 majors and 41 graduate studies programs and its notable facilities/departments are Jack Baskin School of Engineering, McHenry Library, Lick Observatory, Stevenson College, Rachel Carson College, Porter College, Oakes College and few more.
