About University of California-Santa Barbara
UC Santa Barbara is a public institute and a research university that traces its roots to the Anna Blake School founded in 1891. It was made into a state normal school after it was taken over by the state in 1909. Over the years it developed its curriculum, became a state college and thereon further transformed into a university.
It was in the year 1958 that it officially became part of what is presently called the University of California system. To this day the institute has remained true to its founding mission of providing progressive education and indulging its students in intellectual creativity, leadership and reasoning. The university presently has 10 National Institutes and Centers and six Nobel Laureates associated with it.
The campus life at the UCSB is diverse and filled with opportunities for its students to learn, grow and build new experiences. The Office of the Student Life is the central office for student activities; it offers student organizations (approximately 300 operate each year) as well as fraternities and sororities which serve as the primary platform for the extracurricular activities. Students can register new organizations and lead them. The Student Affairs department looks after the leadership initiatives; there is also the student government on campus called ‘Associated Students’ which represents student interests. There is also the LEAP, which is the leadership education and training initiative. Fun and entertainment make it to the campus through arts, cultural events, film screenings, alumni events, comedy events, summer parties and much more. Students also find plenty of recreational opportunities such as fitness festivals, youth programs, adventure programs etc. The university also has athletic participation at NCAA Division I; its teams are called Gauchos. The official campus colors are Blue and Gold.
The academic programs offered at UC Santa Barbara include more than 200 majors, degrees and credentials, which include more than 50 graduate and doctoral programs. Its prominent facilities/departments are Davidson Library, Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, and Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.
