About University of California-San Diego
UC San Diego is a research university and a public institute that traces its founding to 1903 when Scripps Institute of Oceanography was established. It was in 1955 that the efforts for establishing a University of California campus in the region began and things were put into progress. It was the year 1960 that officially marked the beginning of this present day university.
It is based in San Diego, California and is a sea grant as well as a space grant university. Understanding its role as a change maker worldwide, the university is dedicated to knowledge development, critical thinking, and community engagement for its students.
At the University of California-San Diego, the focus is not just academic excellence but training its students in every sphere of life. Students spend as much time inside classrooms as well as outside; there are more than 550 student organizations offering many diverse interests and fields. These provide with the opportunities for students to lead these groups, meet new people and make lasting memories. The campus also has its Greek life. For active leadership learning, there is also the campus student government, where students learn by participating in leadership and public service work. Celebrating diversity on the campus are the community centers which represents different ethnic and cultural groups. Many cultural events are also hosted around the campus. There is also the campus Center for Ethics and Spirituality. There are many arts groups which bring performances throughout the year including theatre, films, concerts and more. There are also campus events incorporating entertainment as well as education such as public tours, career events, conferences, film screenings etc. Students also enjoy taking part in athletics; the university teams are called Tritons, competing at NCAA Division I. The official campus colors are Navy Blue and Gold and the mascot is ‘King Triton’.
Academics at the university consist of 125+ undergraduate degree programs and 50+ graduate degree programs. Its notable departments/facilities are Rady School of Management, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Geisel Library, Jacobs School of Engineering, Powell-Focht Bioengineering Building and more.
