About University of California-Los Angeles
UCLA, founded in 1919 is a public research university; however, it traces its roots to the year 1881 when a state normal school was founded by the state legislature. It was in 1917 that with lobbying to change the school into a campus of University of California was done and despite resistance, it was made so.
It grew rapidly and by 1953 was officially renamed as University of California-Los Angeles. It is part of the University of California system and over the time has incorporated inclusiveness in its educational endeavors, training its students into research, critical thinking, discovery, and uplifting of communities around the world.
The opportunities that students find at UCLA are diverse and aimed at building their experiences. Students have the opportunity to be involved in running or participating in more than 1000 student clubs and organizations. Additionally, there are campus fraternities and sororities. Student interests and concerns are looked after by the student governments working on campus. These also serve as important platforms where students get to demonstrate and improve their leadership skills. There is also a Student Committee for the Arts, serving those with creative ideas and celebrating diversity and cultures. It organizes performing arts events, entertainment events such as concerts, plays, festivals, shows and more. Community service is promoted through the Center for Community Learning and Volunteer Center, which bring both education as well as practical volunteer work for the students, building their civic skills. Student support at the campus is considered vital and is offered through the Career Center, assistance and transition programs and more. The university has its athletic teams called ‘Bruins’, which competes at NCAA Division I. Its mascot is the ‘Joe Bruin and Josephine Bruin’ and the official colors are UCLA Blue and UCLA Gold.
Its academic offerings consist of 125+ majors, 90+ minors and nearly 150 graduate degree programs. Its prominent facilities/departments are Royce Hall, Herb Alpert School of Music, Anderson School of Management, Luskin School of Public Affairs, David Geffen School of Medicine and more.
