University of Missouri-St Louis Seal About University of Missouri-St Louis

UMSL is a public research university which goes back to the year 1960 when it was founded as Normandy Residence Center, a two year institute. The resources for the center came from the citizens who wanted a community college and so in its early years, the center was also provided with faculty by the University of Missouri.

Within sometime an agreement for the purchase of the center was carried out between the university and the center. It came into effect in 1963 when it was also renamed as University of Missouri-St Louis. It is based in St. Louis, Missouri.

With values of excellence and creativity as its educational standards the campus life at UMSL is equally vibrant and energetic. Students take part in more than 120 students run organisations present on the campus and also engage in exercise and programs that let them have growth and learning opportunities in organisational experience. For further developmental and leadership growth, the campus also offers leadership programs and formal trainings through Open Leadership Workshops, Women’s Leadership Institute and so many more. There is also the campus Greek Life. One unique program is the ‘Speaker Series’ which invites speakers from various backgrounds and fields to speak at the campus to help students with their academics goals, especially. One important student organisation is the University Programming Board which organises and plans student events for bringing entertainment and activities on campus; some of the traditional yearly events include Friday Night Flicks, Late Night Bingo, Mirth Week and others. The students also take part in athletic competitions at NCAA Division II. The campus teams are called ‘Tritons’, the mascot is ‘Louie the Triton’ and the colors Red and Gold.

Academic programs at the university consist of 31 undergraduate programs, 25 graduate programs and 19 certificate programs. Its notable facilities/departments are Pierre Laclede Honors College, Thomas Jefferson Library, Sue Shear Institute for Women in Public Life, the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center and others.
