About Thomas Aquinas College
Thomas Aquinas College is a private Roman Catholic liberal arts college. The proposal for establishing the college was published in 1969 and the document is currently known as the “Blue Book” referring to the color of its cover. The proposal included offering a single integrated academic program without any majors or minors. The curriculum offered at the college is limited only to a certain collection of books referred to as the great books. Students will learn using the Socratic discussion method. The college received its first donation from philanthropist Henry Salvatori who granted the college $10,000 for its establishment. In 1970, the college organized major promotional dinner at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, attended by 450 people. It was planned to open the college at the campus of Dominican College in the Bay Area however, this plan was not fulfilled. The college started operating in 1971 in at a leased campus at Claretville, the former novitiate and seminary of the Claretian order in Malibu Canyon in Southern California. The first class held included 33 students. In 1975, the college got the approval from the California Department of Education to grant degrees and graduated its first class in the same year. In 1978, the college started establishing its permanent campus after it was informed that the leased campus was sold and the college had to relocate. The campus was opened in the same year. In 1997, the college started offering its Summer Great Books Program for High School Students. In 2009, the college dedicated its permanent chapel; Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. The building cost $23 million.
