About The University of West Florida
The University of West Florida (UWF) is a public higher education institute located in Pensacola, Florida. The university was established in 1963 by the Florida Legislature as part of the State University System. It was the sixth member of the State System to be established with sixth more to be established afterwards. In 1965, ground was broken for the university campus which covered at that time 1000 acres. In the same year, the Chambered Nautilus was chosen as the official emblem for the university. Classes started for the first time in 1967 graduating 58 students in the following year. In 1969, the university received accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for its undergraduate programs. Initially, the university was orgranized into three residential or cluster colleges called Alpha, Gamma and Omega. The structure was reorganized in 1979 to more traditional form consisting of three colleges. The university offered upper division and postgraduate studies only till 1983 when it started admitting freshmen to its programs. In 1997, the university expanded its campuses by purchasing additional 600 acres.
West Florida main campus covers 1,600 acres overlooking the Escambia River. The campus contains 35 academic buildings, 25 residence halls and 21 student services buildings. Prominent buildings on campus include Argonaut Village, Camellia Garden, Nautilus Card Office, Crosby Hall and Pace Library which contains more than 600,000 printed volumes and 1 million microfilms. Additionally, the university operates ta branch property on Santa Rosa Island that is used for recreational, academic, and research purposes. West Florida athletic teams compete in the NCAA Division II as members of Gulf South Conference. They are nicknamed Argonauts while their official colors are blue and green.
West Florida is currently divided into 6 colleges including the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering. It offers 45 undergraduate and graduate programs in 50 academic disciplines.
