About The Juilliard School
Juilliard School is a private performing arts conservatory located in Manhattan, New York City. The conservatory was established in 1905 and was called the Institute of Musical Art. The institute aimed at providing music education to students in the USA who had to go to Europe to study music. The institute operated initially at the former Lenox Mansion before moving 5 years later to Claremont Avenue in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. This campus was formerly used as a mental hospital; Bloomingdale Insane Asylum. In 1920, the Juilliard Foundation was established based on the donations from Augustus D. Juilliard who aimed at promoting music education in the United States. Four years later, the foundation purchased the Vanderbilt family guesthouse to establish the Juilliard Graduate School. The Julliard School of Music resulted from partial merge between this school and the Institute of Musical Art. The two institutes kept their separate identities while sharing the same President and Board of Directors. The schools merged completely by 1946 forming a single school. In 1946, the school president; William Schuman, established the Juilliard String Quartet. He also established a dancing division 5 years later. In 1999, Julliard School received the National Medal of Arts. In 2001, the school started offering a jazz training program. In 2015, the school announced plans to establish an international campus in Tianjin, China.
The school is located in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It offers several facilities for performance and exhibitions including the Peter Jay Sharp Theater, Paul Hall, Morse Hall and Wislon Theatre.
Julliard offers three programs in drama, dance and music granting bachelor and master degrees. The school also operates the Music Technology Center offering studies in digital technology for performance and creation of music. Additionally, the school has a pre-college division offering programs to elementary and high school students.
