SUNY Maritime College Seal About SUNY Maritime College

A public institute and part of the State University of New York, this college for nautical education was founded in 1874. The efforts to establish an institute to train professional seamen emerged after facing fall in the maritime industry in the country. New York Chamber of Commerce and the port of New York struggled to get the approval for professional nautical education which was then granted in year 1873.

With the vessel for training the seamen granted in year 1874, the SUNY Maritime College became the first of its kind institute in the entire country. Offering commercial nautical education it is based in Bronx, New York and offers quality academics, with focus on student development through practical learning programs.

At the campus of Maritime students find all the right resources to help them grow academically, practically, professionally as well as individually. As part of extracurricular programs, the students find over 30 student led clubs and organisations that help them learn skills, make social connections and adjust to the campus life. For further reinforcement of dedication, passion and leadership skills that the students learn while their time at the college, they are encouraged to be part of the regiment of cadets – an important program for developing leadership and team building. The campus also brings routine cultural, social, recreational and such programs and activities, the information of which can be found on the porthole, the student portal. For community learning and engagement, the college offers programs, four sessions annually consisting of American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Waterfront Lifeguarding Course, Youth Aquatics Group Swim Lessons, Water Aerobics and many others. Extra student support exists in the form of academic advising helping study choose study courses and also manage time, study skills and help sort other academic issues. On the campus, there are also 17 athletic varsity teams competing at NCAA; the college mascot is ‘Privateer Pete’.

Academic programs at the college consist of 11 undergraduate degree programs, two Masters degree programs and an advanced certificate program. Its notable facility is the Stephen B. Luce Library.
