About SUNY Downstate Medical Center
Downstate is a public institute and a medical school that goes back to the year 1858 when it was chartered as a medical school with the Long Island College Hospital and opened up for instructions by 1860. It was among those few medical schools which at that time granted admission to African Americans and also allowed women after WWI. By 1930 it separated from the hospital.
Formally known as The State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, It is based in Brooklyn, New York. Since beginning the medical institute has contributed to the lives of its people and improved the healthcare in its community by producing professionals which are well advanced in research and knowledge.
At SUNY Downstate Medical Center students engage in activities which prepare them both for academics as well as in extracurricular activities. The main center at the campus is the ‘Student Center’ which organizes all types of cultural, social and recreational activities for the students. Not only activities, but the center also serves as the space for students to hold meetings and conferences as well as a spot for relaxing with friends or alone. The campus also offers activities and social mobility in the form of student-run organisations of which more than 45 are present on the campus. Students also find the opportunities to gain professional experience and real world practical learning through participation in the Student Councils and the Center-Wide Committees. Volunteering work is also done by the students as part of community service. Other student services extend to providing Student Counselling in an attempt to offering a supportive environment and maintaining mental and physical health of its students while they pursue their academic goals. Students are also provided with advisors and mentors along their academic journey and which helps in professional development beforehand.
Academic programs at Downstate consist of four Bachelors degree programs, 14 Masters degree programs, six PhD programs, advanced certificates and Residency & Fellowship Programs.
