SUNY College at Potsdam Seal About SUNY College at Potsdam

Potsdam is public higher education institute that began when it was founded in year 1816 as St. Lawrence Academy by founder Benjamin Raymond. In 1834, the college was chosen for teacher training by the state’s legislature and funds were allotted for it. By 1867, the college was renamed as Potsdam Normal School.

Being among the founding members of State University of New York system in 1948, it became part of the system. From becoming the first institute to offer teacher training for music teachers, the college has come far in equipping its students with the skills and education needed for decision making and leadership rooted in tradition as well global engagement.

The students at SUNY College at Potsdam enjoy complete personal and professional development through many of the activities and resources available on campus. Majority of the activity on campus is regulated through the Student Government Association, which also represents student grievances on the campus. Furthermore, the students get to develop leadership skills by heading the association and also through the Student Leadership Program, Emerging Leaders Program, and conferences. Besides these, there are other 100 clubs and organisations which provide a chance for student participation in interests ranging from academic, political to cultural, social, honor societies, recreation and others. There is also the Student Union which acts as the center for student activities, providing student amenities and facilities for conducting meeting, or outdoor adventures etc. There is also the campus ministry which regulates the spiritual life and provides space for conducting religious studies and activities. Community engagement is also a significant part of student life as students support many organisations serving the communities. There are also campus athletic teams, ‘Bears’ competing at NCAA Division III and the campus colors are Maroon and Gray.

The academic programs offered are Bachelors and Masters degree programs with 40 majors and 40 minors. Its notable department and facilities are Satterlee Hall, Crane School of Music, Thomas M. Barrington Student Union, Frederick W. Crumb Memorial Library, Charles T. Weaver Anthropology Museum, and more.
