ESF is a public degree granting institute offering specialised education in the fields of environment and forestry. It initially began as a partnership institute with Syracuse University in year 1911. As the education and curriculum expanded, the college found its permanent campus and with State University of New York system being founded in 1948 it became part of it.

The college is based in Syracuse, New York and has evolved in its curriculum to offering education for sustainable future, incorporating technological advancements. With this approach, it aims to prepare students for innovative thinking and, devising practical and creative solutions for real world problems and challenges.

At the campus of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, students find activities and extracurricular programs as well as support services, all of which contribute towards academic and non academic development. With the Student Involvement & Leadership Office, students are not only equipped with leadership sills but also practice them through involvement opportunities, cultural and social programs and community engagement. There are also more than 35 student led organisations including honor societies, academics as well as special interest that provide learning and leadership opportunities. Community engagement for the students involves Service Learning as well as participation and volunteering on Days of Service or through student run clubs. Other student support services include Counselling and academic help in the form of added tuitions. There is also the career services department, providing internship opportunities and helping improve future job success. Students also enjoy being part of the annual traditional campus events such as Alumni and Family Fall BBQ, December Soiree, Welcome Back Picnic and few others. There are college athletic teams, ‘Mighty Oaks’ competes at USCAA. Official campus colors are Green, White and Gold.

The academic programs offered at ESF are 24 undergraduate and 30 graduate degree programs. The notable facilities on campus are Baker Laboratory, Illick Hall, Jahn Laboratory, Walters Hall, Moon Library, Bray Hall and Marshall Hall.
