UAlbany is a public research university that is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It has its roots in the two year normal school that was founded way back in 1844. As changes took place, by 1890 the New York System reformed it into a four year educational institute. Introducing liberal arts disciplines, it evolved into a research institute by 1962.

It was in the same year that it was granted university status and adopted its present name. Based in Albany, New York, it also has campuses in Guilderland, and Rensselaer. The university is recognized for its world class program and a learning centered environment promoting knowledge and research in a global perspective.

At the campus of State University of New York at Albany, students find unique opportunities for enjoying and learning at the same time. Students find more than 200 students clubs and organisations from political, media groups to religious and cultural clubs serving as centers for learning outside of classrooms and providing friendly spaces to get to know new people. These also include government groups which are aimed at developing leadership skills and qualities, and team building among students. With galleries, museums and centers students also promote performing and fine arts on the campus through writer series, films, and music shows etc. There is also emphasis on intercultural development and understanding diversity in a higher level which students get through interfaith center, Shabbos House, or other student run clubs. Physical activities form a huge part of the campus life; students are part of off campus adventures such as Kayaking, water rafting and others. There is also aquatic center, intramurals, club sports and athletic participation at NCAA Division I. The campus teams are called ‘Great Danes’ and the official campus colors are Gold, Black and Purple.

As for the academic programs, these include over 150 undergraduate programs and more than 125 graduate programs. The prestigious buildings and facilities on campus are Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, Thomas E. Dewey Graduate Library, Hawley Hall and Lewis Mumford Center for Comparative Urban and Regional Research.
