Rutgers is a public university and a research institute that traces its roots to the Queen’s College. The college was founded in year 1766 as an all male institute in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It first got its name ‘Rutgers’ in 1825 named for a war veteran. The college was affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church and by 1864 became a land grant institute as well. It wasn’t until 1918 that it started admitting women and by 1924 became a university.

The university has its own annual events that mark tradition as well as bring entertainment and social activity for the students; these are Charity Bed Race, Rutgers Day, Dance Marathon and others. As part of recreation and physical activity, students enthusiastically take part in athletics. The teams are called ‘Scarlet Knights’ competing at NCAA Division I. The official campus color is Scarlet.
