About Pratt Institute-Main
Pratt Institute is a non-profit higher education institute located in Brooklyn, New York. The institute was established in 1887 by Charles Pratt who was an oil businessman and one of the wealthiest men who ever lived in Brooklyn. He aimed at providing affordable education to the working class to help them improve their lives. The first class started in the same year with 12 students who were taught in the Main Hall. The institute was among the first institutes to follow a non-discrimination policy accepting students regardless of their gender, color or class. After six months, the student enrollment grew to around 600 students and reached 1,000 by the first anniversary. As the institute grew, new departments were added including Pratt High School. Later, the Department of Commerce grew to the extent that it separated into an independent institute under the name of Heffley School of Commerce. The institute established a new library in 1896 under the name of Victorian-Renaissance Revival library. At that time, this library was the only public library in Brooklyn. In 1910, the institute was reorganized changing its academic departments into separate schools. In 1938, the institute was converted from a technical school into a college upgrading most of the programs to 4-year bachelor programs.
