Pomona College About Pomona College

Pomona College is a private higher education institute for liberal arts located in Claremont, California. It was established in 1887 by a group of Congregationalists who aimed to establish a college following the New England model on the west coast. The college started operating initially in a rented house in Pomona. The board of trustees originally consisted of graduates of Williams, Dartmouth, Bates and Yale. In the following year, the college moved to its current site in Claremont which was former location for an unfinished hotel. The first class graduated from the college in 1894 and consisted of ten students. In 1925, the college became a founding member of Claremont Colleges consortium which followed the model of Oxford University and Cambridge University.  In 1998, three friends established on campus an experimental Permaculture project known as Pomona College Organic Farm.

Pomona current campus covers 140 acres divided into North and South campuses. It consists of 63 buildings. Most of the older buildings consists of only 1 or 2 stories built in the Spanish Renaissance Revival and Mission Styles. Pomona offers 14 residence halls to the students including Mudd-Blaisdell, Harwood Court, Wig Hall, Walker Hall, Norton-Clark III, Lawry Court and Dialynas Hall.
