Polk State College About Polk State College

Polk State College is a public higher education institute located in Winter Haven, Florida. It is part of the Florida College System. It was established in 1964 as the first public higher education institute in Polk County. Initially, it was named Polk Junior College and operatred at a former World War II Army Air Force Base in Bartow. The first class taught at this college consisted of 1,200 students which was twice the number expected during its establishment. The college started establishing its first permanent campus two years later which is known as Polk State Winter Haven. In 1988, the college established a second campus which is known as Polk State Lakeland. The campus was later expanded by including Polk State Airside Center.  In 2009, the college started offering its first bachelor degree program changing its name from Polk Community College to the current one. In the same year, Polk State opened the Polk State JD Alexander Center. The college opened two years later the Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center. In 2011, the college started rebranding process by adopting the Eagle as its mascot and choosing red, black and white as their official colors. Polk State expanded again by establishing the Polk State Clear Springs Advanced Technology Center and the Polk State Center for Public Safety in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

The college states that its mission is to provide affordable quality education that can transform the lives of its students. Polk State athletic teams compete in NJCAA Region 8 division I as members of the Suncoast Conference.

The college offers programs divided into 7 study areas granting bachelor and associate degrees. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The college campuses hosts 3 Collegiate High Schools which allow students to earn associate of arts degrees while completing their high school requirements.
