About Plymouth State University
Plymouth State University (PSU) is a public coeducational university located in Plymouth, New Hampshire. The university was established in 1870 under the name of Plymouth Normal School. Plymouth was selected by the board of trustees to establish the new school. In 1874, the college was reorganized into training schools under the supervision of the normal school. In 1890, the college campus was expanded by building a new academic hall which is known as Rounds Hall in addition to a new dormitory. In 1927, the school was ranked by the American Council of Teacher Colleges as Grade A teachers college. In 1939, the name of the college was changed to Plymouth Teachers College. In 1948, Plymouth started offering graduate degree programs. The name of the college was changed again in 1963 to Plymouth State College of the University System of New Hampshire. It finally achieved the university status and got its current name in 2003. In 2017, the university was reorganized into clusters instead of academic departments or colleges.
Plymouth State has a rural campus with several distinctive buildings and facilities including Boyd Science Center, Museum of the White Mountains, Samuel Read Hall Building and Highland Hall. The campus also hosts the Enterprise Center at Plymouth which was opened in 2013 as collaboration between the university and the Grafton County Economic Development Council. It serves a business incubator and accelerator. The campus offers 11 residential halls including Belknap Residence Hall, Pemigewasset Residence Hall, Geneva Smith Hall, Merrill Place and Langdon Woods Hall. The university athletic teams compete in NCAA Division III as members of Little East Conference. Their official colors are green and white while their mascot is called Pemi the Panther.
Plymouth State is divided into 7 clusters offering 52 undergraduate, 31 master’s and 2 doctoral degree programs in addition to several certification programs.
