About Pitzer College
Pitzer College is a private higher education institute for liberal arts located in Claremont, California. The college was established in 1963 by Russell K. Pitzer as a women’s college. The first class was enrolled in the university in 1964 and included 153 students who were taught by 11 professors. The first graduation was held in the following year. In 1970, the college became coeducational institute. In 2016, Melvin L. Oliver became the college president and the first African American to lead one of the five Claremont Colleges.
The college states that its mission is to offer liberal arts education to prepare students to become responsible and engaged members of the international community. The college campus covers around 35 acres within the Claremont Colleges property that hosts 7 higher education institutes forming the Claremont University Consortium. The Campus consists of 16 buildings. It offers 5 residential halls including Pitzer, Atherton and Sanborn halls which are Gold LEED-Certified while the remaining two halls are Platinum LEED certification. The majority of the buildings on campus are characterized by contemporary architecture except the Grove House which was moved to the campus in 1977. Other prominent facilities on campus include John R. Rodman Arboretum, George C. S. Benson Auditorium, Stephen L. Glass Commencement Plaza, Keck Science Complex II and McConnell Center which is the main dining hall. Additionally, the college operates the Firestone Center for Restoration Ecology which covers 145 acres close to Playa Dominical, Costa Rica. Pitzer shares a common athletic program with Pomona College. Their teams compete in NCAA Division III as members of the the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Their official colors are blue and orange while their mascot is called Cecil the Sagehen.
The college offers academic programs in 41 majors and 22 minors. Students may complete part of their studies in partner institutes either locally or abroad through one of 58 study exchange programs offered by the college. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
