Pace University Seal About Pace University

Pace University is a private coeducational higher education institute located in Manhattan, New York City. The university was established in 1906 by brothers Homer St. Clair Pace and Charles A. Pace. It was initially a coeducational business school under the name of Pace Institute. The first class consisted of 13 students. The institute was approved as a college in 1947 by the New York State Board of Regents.  The institute purchased its first permanent campus in 1951. The building is currently known as One Pace Plaza and is designated since 1999 as a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. A branch campus was opened in 1963 in Pleasantville, New Jersey. The university opened Pace Plaza, which is the largest building on its campuses, six years later. Pace was recognized as a university in 1973. White Plains campus became part of the university when it merged with the College of White Plains in 1975. Two years later, the university purchased Briarcliff College. In 1997, Pace University purchased the World Trade Institute which was located at One World Trade Center.

The university states that its mission is to provide knowledge, experience along with liberal arts curriculum that help the students realize their full potential. The university main campus is located within the Civil Center of Lower Manhattan. Major part of the university campus which was located on the 55th floor of the World Trade Center was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. Causalities of the attacks included 4 students and 40 alumni. The university acquired three buildings in replacement of the destroyed campus. The main art theatre on campus is known as the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts. The university athletic teams are known as the Setters and compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Their official colors are gold and blue.

The university is divided into 9 schools including Dyson College of Arts and Sciences, Lubin School of Business and Pforzheimer Honors College. Pace was ranked 180th among U.S. universities by U.S. News & World Report.
