About Otis College of Art and Design
Otis College of Art and Design is a private higher education institute located in Los Angeles, California. The school was established in 1918 as the first independent professional school of art. The first campus occupied by the school in Westlake was donated by Harrison Gray Otis founder of Los Angeles Times. In 1997, the school relocated close to the Los Angeles International Airport in Westchester area of Los Angeles. The main building of the campus was established in 1963 for IBM and was famous for its windows which look like punched cards. In 2001, the campus was expanded by establishing the Galef Center which hosts the Fine Arts department. In 1978, the school became affiliated to New York’s Parsons School of Design and was named “Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, A Division of the New School for Social Research” which was shortly known Otis-Parsons. During this time, students were able to spend one semester at Parsons School in New York or Paris. In 1991, the school separated again to an independent institute and got its current name.
Otis states that its mission is to prepare students of arts and design to participate in the world with their creativity, vision and skills. The college campus is located in Westchester, Los Angeles, California. It consists of 6 buildings including Kathleen Holser Ahmanson Hall. Facilities offered by the college campus include Millard Sheets Library and Elaine’s Dining Commons. The college mascot is called Otis Owl.
The college offers undergraduate programs in 16 majors and 18 minors in addition to 3 graduate programs. Otis is accredited by WSCUC Senior College and University Commission and National Association of Schools of Art and Design. It has achieved distinctive rankings as it has been ranked as the 6th among national universities for Value of Education by the Economist. Additionally, Otis has been ranked fourth for Best Value Added College by Money Magazine.
