Oklahoma City University Seal About Oklahoma City University

Oklahoma City University (OCU) is a private coeducational university that was historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university was established in 1902 under the name of Epworth University. Construction of the campus started in the same year and was completed 2 years later. The college was closed in 1911 because of financial difficulties while the church formed Oklahoma Methodist University. The college relocated in 1919 to Oklahoma City under the name of Oklahoma City College. In 1924, the college got its current name to indicate the expansion of the college. In 1950s, the university received accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The university then expanded by taking control of Oklahoma City College of Law and reached a partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1976, the church started a fund raising campaign which collected $3 million by 1980. In the following year, the college paid all debts and started making profits for the first time since 1975. Part of the college campus including the Goldstar Building was listed in 1978 as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.

The university states that its mission is to prepare students to create, lead and serve. The university campus covers 104 acres offering several distinctive buildings and facilities including Clara Jones Administration Building, Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel, Dulaney-Browne Library, Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Building, Sarkeys Science and Mathematics Center, McDaniel University Center, Edith Kinney Gaylord Center, Meinders School of Business and Henry K. Freede Wellness and Activity Center. The campus offers several residential options to the students including Oklahoma United Methodist Hall, Banning Hall, Walker Hall and Cokesbury Court.

The university is divided into 8 colleges and schools including Petree College of Arts & Sciences, Meinders School of Business, Kramer School of Nursing, Wanda L. Bass School of Music, Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Entertainment and Wimberly School of Religion. The university offers 70 undergraduate programs, 1 master’s program and 2 doctoral programs. OCU is classified by Carnegie Foundation as a master’s college and university.
