About Oklahoma Baptist University
Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) is a private Christian university for liberal arts. It was established in 1910 by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma which stills owns the university. The university was established on 60 acres donated by the City of Shawnee along with $100,000. It was named the Baptist University of Oklahoma and its campus was called the Kickapoo site. The university held its first class in 1911 which included 150 students. The class was held in the basement of the First Baptist Church and in the Convention Hall of Shawnee. In 1911, the university faced financial difficulties because of general depression in the state which led to suspending classes while continuing organization and fund raising efforts. The university was reopened in 1915 after completing the construction of the Administration Hall which was later known as Shawnee Hall. The name of the university was changed 5 years later to the current one.
Oklahoma Baptist currently occupies an urban campus covering more than 210 acres. The campus offers several distinctive facilities including Bailey Business Center, Geiger Center, Mabee Learning Center, the Noble Complex, John Wesley Raley Chapel, Andrew Potter Auditorium, Jent Alumni Center and Ford Music Hall. The campus is also home to many monuments which are class gifts or external donations. Monuments include the sundial, the bison statue, Gold Star Park, the quadrangle clocktower and the Truth Walk. Unmarried students under 21 years are all required to live on campus. The university offers 8 apartment complexes and 5 residence halls. The university athletic teams, who are nicknamed the Bison, compete in the Great American Conference as members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Athletic facilities offered by the university include the Noble Complex and Clark Craig Fieldhouse. Oklahoma is currently divided into colleges and schools including Joe L.
