About Occidental College
Occidental College (Oxy) is a private liberal arts higher education institute located in Los Angeles, California. The college was established in 1887 by James George Bell, Lyman Stewart, and Thomas Bard. The first class started at the college in the following year and included 13 female and 27 male students. In 1896, the college relocated to the old St. Vincent’s College campus as its former building was destroyed by fire. The college started two years later establishing a new campus at Highland Park with three buildings. In 1909, the college received a proposal from the Pomona College to merge but the proposal was not achieved. In the following year, the college ended its ties with the Presbyterian Church. In 1912, the college started building its current campus in Eagle Rock neighborhood. In 1917, the college participated in the World War I by forming the Students Army Training Corps. During the World War II, a Navy V-12[22] officer training program was established on campus and was terminated in 1945. The college established in 1966, its Upward Bound programs which aimed at helping low-income students to get enrolled in college studies. In 1969, students protested in several ways against the participation of the United States in Southeast Asia.
The college campus covers 120 acres on a hillside. It includes several distinctive buildings and facilities as Johnson Hall, Anderson Field, Arthur G. Coons Administrative Center, Berkus House, Bird Hillside Theatre and the Keck Theater in addition to a 1-megawatt solar array. The campus has been ranked in 2012 by Newsweek as the 6th most beautiful campus in the United States. The college athletic teams, who are nicknamed Tigers, compete in SCIAC and NCAA Division III. Its official colors are orange and black.
Occidental college offers 34 majors and 9 minors. It has several partnership agreements allowing students to study some of their courses at other prestigious institutes as California Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Columbia University School of Law and Keck Graduate Institute. Occidental is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
