Northwestern College Seal About Northwestern College

Northwestern College is a private Christian higher education institute located in Orange City, Iowa. The college was established in 1882 under the name of “Northwestern Classical Academy”. In 1894, the college established its first permenant building; Zwemer Hall, which is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The academy expanded into a junior college in 1928 changing its name to Northwestern Junior College. In 1953, the college received institutional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. It finally became a four-year college changing its name to the current one in 1961.

The college states that its mission is to provide courageous and faithful learning environment that prepares the students to follow Christ and become God servants in the world. The college has a rural campus covering 100 acres. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Juffer Athletic Fieldhouse,  Ramaker Center, DeWitt Learning Commons, DeWitt Physical Fitness Center, Rowenhorst Student Center, DeWitt Theatre Arts Center, Korver Visual Arts Center, Bultman Center for Health, Physical Education and Intercollegiate Athletics and Christ Chapel. Every year the students organize dancing concert, RUSH which is completely run by students. The university athletic teams, who are nicknamed Red Raiders, compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference as members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The official colors of the college are red and white.

The college is divided into 23 academic departments. It offers undergraduate programs in 50 majors in addition to 17 pre-professional programs. There are also 6 interdisciplinary programs and an ESL non-degree program. Moreover, the college has a school for graduate studies and adult learning. Northwestern sends each spring around 200 students to to serve with ministries in the U.S. Similarly, students can also participate in the Summer of Service Program.
