About Northwest Indian College
Northwest Indian College (NWIC) is a tribal higher education institute located in Bellingham, Washington. The college was established in 1973 under the name of “Lummi Indian School of Aquaculture” with the aim of providing local technicians to work in Indian-owned and operated fish and shellfish hatcheries. In 1983, the college received its charter from the Lummi Community as the Lummi Community College to provide more comprehensive post-secondary education. In 1988, the college started a campaign to get accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The accreditation was granted 5 years later and accordingly the name of the college was changed to “Northwest Indian College”. It was recognized in 2008 as four-year College granting bachelor degrees. The school is currently follows open enrollment policy which means that it does not require SAT or ACT for admission. Northwest is a member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. NWIC follows four main core Lummi Beliefs which are called Selalexw, Schtengexwen, Xwlemichosen and Lengesot which emphasize on the integrity, strength and respect of the Lummi community.
The college states that its mission is to promote Tribal self-determination and to fulfill the needs of American Indian people living in the surrounding community. The college main campus is located in the Lummi Indian Reservation in Washington State. It offers two residential halls to the students; one on campus and another one few minutes walking away. Additionally, the college has six branch campuses including Swinomish, Tulalip, Port Gamble S’Klallam and Muckleshoot campuses.
The college offers 4 bachelor degree programs, 9 associate degree programs and 3 non-degree certificate programs. Some programs are also offered online.
