New York University is private non-denominational university whose main campus is located in New York City. The university was established in 1831 by Albert Gallatin aiming at providing equal opportunities to all students based on merits rather than their social class. The university received its charter in the same year from the New York State Legislature under the name of “the University of the City of New York”. Classes were held in the following year in rented classrooms in Clinton Hall. In 1835, the university established its first professional school which was the school of law. In 1876, the American Chemical Society was established within the university. The name of the university was changed to the current one in 1896.
