About New York School of Interior Design
New York School of Interior Design is a private higher education institute located in New York City, New York. The school was established in 1916 by architect Sherrill Whiton. Establishment of the school started in 1914 when Whiton started Home Study Course in the Decorative Arts. He established the college 2 years later and named it New York School of Interior Decoration as the number of students increased. The school received its charter in 1924 when it was approved by the New York State Board of Regents. In 1937, Whiton published an important book in interior design education and named it “Elements of Interior Decoration”. Currently, the book is still important reference with 6 editions published while its name was changed it to “Interior Design and Decoration”. The name of the school was changed in 1951 to its current name. The school was located on Madison Avenue and in Midtown before relocating in 1994 to its current location on East 70th Street. The school expanded later by establishing a facility East 69th Street. In 2010, the school established a graduate center on Park Avenue South and 28th Street which gained LEED-Platinum certification.
The school states that its mission is to prepare students to become leading interior designers by offering focused and immersive programs. The school campus offers several distinctive facilities as The Mario Buatta Atelier, the Lighting Lab and the Roof Garden. The school allows rental of its classrooms, auditorium and gallery spaces for select events.
New York School offers 9 academic programs. Three programs are also offered online. It grants bachelor, associate and master’s degrees. The New York School also offers study abroad programs to the students allowing them to take part of their studies at distant locations as Rome, London, Prague and Vienna. The school is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
